Understanding Your Surgical Scars & The Journey to Improvement

Surgical scars, whether from planned procedures or unexpected injuries, are a natural part of the body’s healing process.  However, their appearance and feel can sometimes cause distress, affecting confidence and even physical comfort. Common types of surgical and trauma-related scars include:

  • Hypertrophic Scars: Raised, often red scars that stay within the original wound boundaries. They can be itchy or tender.
  • Atrophic Scars: Sunken or indented scars, resulting from a loss of underlying tissue.
  • Keloid Scars: Thick, raised scars that can grow beyond the original wound area. They may be itchy or painful and are more common in some skin types. Keloid scars require careful specialist assessment and a dedicated management plan, which we will discuss thoroughly with you.
  • Contracture Scars: Often from burns, these scars tighten the skin, potentially restricting movement if over a joint.
  • Fine-line Scars: Common after well-healed incisions, these may fade but often remain visible

The goal of treatment is not complete erasure, which is rarely possible, but significant improvement in the scar’s appearance (colour, texture, size), as well as any associated discomfort or restriction.

Our Signature Protocol for Surgical Scar Revision in London

We understand that every scar tells a story. Our “Signature Protocol” is a bespoke, multi-stage approach designed by our London scar specialists to address the unique characteristics of your surgical or injury scar, aiming for the best possible aesthetic and functional outcome.

Expert Scar Assessment & Personalised Strategy Development in London

Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation at our London clinic. Our specialist will:

  • Discuss your scar’s history, your specific concerns (cosmetic, discomfort, movement restriction), and your desired outcomes.
  • Meticulously examine your scar, assessing its type (hypertrophic, atrophic, etc.), age, location, size, colour, texture, and pliability.
  • Benefit for You: This detailed assessment is vital. It allows us to create a highly personalised and realistic treatment plan, selecting the most appropriate technologies to maximise improvement and manage your expectations effectively from the start.

Advanced Multi-Modal Treatment Pathway – Combining Plexr, Smartside CO2 & Virtue RF

Based on your individual assessment, your personalised treatment pathway will likely involve a strategic combination of our advanced technologies, and potentially other supportive therapies, to achieve optimal results.

Plexr (Plasma Sublimation) for Precise Scar Refinement

  • How it helps your scar: Plexr uses plasma energy to precisely treat superficial scar irregularities and improve texture. It can be effective for refining the edges of surgical scars and improving the appearance of some hypertrophic scars. 5
  • Your Experience: A non-surgical, highly targeted treatment. Numbing cream is used for comfort. 6

Smartside CO2 Laser (Fractional Ablative) for Comprehensive Scar Resurfacing

  • How it helps your scar: The Smartside CO2 laser is a powerful tool for smoothing scar tissue, improving texture, reducing pigmentation irregularities, and flattening raised (hypertrophic) scars. It stimulates deep collagen production to help remodel the scar. 4
  • Your Experience: A highly effective treatment for significant scar improvement. Topical anaesthetic ensures comfort. 73

Virtue RF Microneedling for Deep Scar Remodelling & Texture Improvement

  • How it helps your scar: Virtue RF combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen and elastin deep within the scar tissue. This improves scar texture, firmness, and can be particularly beneficial for hypertrophic scars.  Please note: RF Microneedling is generally not recommended for active keloid scars due to the risk of stimulating further growth and will be carefully assessed by our specialists.
  • Your Experience: Minimal downtime with significant collagen stimulation. Numbing cream is used.

The Power of Our Combined & Supportive Approach – Your Unique Synergy:
Achieving the best results for surgical scars often requires more than one type of treatment.  Our “Signature Protocol” is built on strategically combining Plexr, Smartside CO2, and Virtue RF to target your scar at multiple levels. For example, CO2 laser might address surface texture while Virtue RF works deeper to remodel collagen.  Depending on your scar type (especially for persistent hypertrophic or keloid scars), your plan may also include specialist topical treatments (like silicone gels ) or intralesional steroid injections, always administered by our expert clinicians.  This comprehensive, multi-modal approach is key to achieving significant, lasting improvement.

Managing Healing, Optimising Outcomes & Long-Term Care

Improving surgical scars is a journey that requires patience and commitment.

  • Realistic Timelines: It’s important to understand that your scar may initially look more conspicuous or feel different for one to three months after certain treatments. Significant improvement often takes a year or even up to 18 months to become fully apparent.
  • Dedicated Aftercare: We provide detailed post-treatment instructions, including advice on cleansing, moisturising, scar massage (where appropriate), and diligent sun protection (high SPF) to prevent pigmentation issues and support optimal healing
  • Ongoing Support & Monitoring: Regular follow-up appointments at our London clinic allow us to monitor your progress, manage any concerns, and make adjustments to your treatment plan as needed.
  • Benefit for You: Our thorough approach to healing and aftercare helps to maximise your results, manage expectations about the recovery process, and ensures you feel supported throughout your scar improvement journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

We treat a variety of surgical and trauma-related scars, including hypertrophic (raised) scars, atrophic (sunken) scars, and contracture scars. We also provide specialist assessment and multi-modal management plans for keloid scars. The best approach is determined after a thorough consultation.

This is highly individual and depends on your scar's type, size, age, and your body's healing response. Most surgical scar treatments require a course of sessions. 4 For example, CO2 laser or Virtue RF may involve several sessions spaced weeks or months apart. 7 We will create a personalised treatment schedule for you.

We use topical numbing creams and other comfort measures to ensure procedures are as comfortable as possible. Most patients tolerate the treatments well, describing sensations like warmth or prickling.

Recovery varies with the treatment. Some procedures have minimal downtime (e.g., some Virtue RF applications ), while others like CO2 laser or more intensive Plexr may involve redness, swelling, and crusting for 5-10 days or more.  It is common for scars to appear more noticeable (e.g., redder or temporarily darker) for a period (1-3 months) after certain treatments before the long-term improvement becomes evident.  This is part of the healing and remodelling process.

Our technologies can treat many types of surgical scars on various skin types. Virtue RF microneedling is often suitable for a wider range of skin tones.  For CO2 laser and Plexr, careful assessment and customised settings are vital for darker skin to minimise pigmentation risks.  Keloid scars require a particularly cautious and specialised approach, often involving combination therapies beyond just these devices.  A full assessment will determine the best options for you.

Our goal is to achieve significant improvement in your scar's appearance (making it flatter, softer, less red or pigmented, and narrower) and to alleviate any discomfort or tightness. Complete scar removal is very rarely possible. We will provide a realistic prognosis during your consultation.
